Prompted by this post by Chris Jones at DRaysBay (shouldn't they have to drop the "D" from their name or get fined?), I started thinking about who my favorite baseball players were. I realized I don't have any, and that I never really have.
I've always liked the underdoggy guys that everyone likes, the Marco Scutaros and Frankie Menechinos. I like the guys with approaches that sabermetricians get excited about, like Jack Cust and Adam Dunn. I like guys who run real fast, like Rajai Davis. But I don't think I could identify someone who was my favorite player in baseball, or even create a top-n list for any meaningfully small n.
I'm not sure why this is, and I also don't know how typical or unusual it is. Do most fans have favorite players? Is there a split in saber-oriented fans vs. "traditional" fans? Is there a split in who we choose as our favorites?
