Here is an almost entirely contentless article about the A's catching situation. I don't mean to be rude, but sometimes it seems the A's, from Billy Beane to Bob Melvin to whoever the 25th guy on the roster is (Chris Young?), give about one good or interesting or substantive or insightful quote a month. I know baseball players have been trained in this for decades, instructed at least informally and maybe formally in the fine art filling time with reporters while saying absolutely zip, but it feels like the A's have elevated this to Olympian heights.
Jeff Kirshman does paraphrase Bob Melvin stating that while Stephen Vogt will be starting, Kurt Suzuki should play a defensive closer role late in games. That leaves Derek Norris to pinch-hit against Drew Smyly as needed, not only for Vogt but for Eric Sogard or Josh Reddick or Brandon Moss. I agree with and like this.
