Two major injuries happened last night, both of which make me a little sad. First, and sadder, Cookie Monster's career is likely over. Dikembe Mutombo hurt his knee last night (Greg Oden was involved -- surprised?) and he was talking after the game like that might be it. The end was coming for Cookie, as he's 42 years old and was, in his best days, a limited player. It's just terrible that he doesn't get to end on his own terms.
The other injury is to Leon Powe. The Celtics are just looking star-crossed at this point. I could say something about the general obnoxious attitudes exhibited by both Garnett and Powe, but then I'd wonder why Kendrick Perkins isn't dead -- if Garnett's badguyness is enough to give him knee problems, surely Perkins's would result in decapitation? Maybe karma just doesn't work that cruelly.
Anyway, Powe was the guy who it felt like averaged six dunks a game against the Lakers in the Finals last year. Without Garnett, the Celtics aren't getting anywhere near the Finals this year, but you'd at least like to see them as close to full strength as possible for the sake of making the playoffs interesting. Who do the Celtics turn to now? Bill Walker?
