The A's acquired Adam Kennedy from Tampa Bay yesterday for a PTBNL. The A's have been decimated by injury in the infield, necessitating the callup of multiple Sacramento Rivercats, so it's possible that Kennedy is merely minor-league reinforcement. On the other hand, it's also possible that the A's would rather have Gregorio Petit playing every day in AAA than sitting on the bench in Oakland, and thus plan to have Kennedy come to the bigs soon. The question raised by either of these possibilities is the status of Mark Ellis. Do the A's just want a patch for the few weeks that he'll be out? Or is there something that's going to keep him out for more than a few weeks, and thus need the organizational depth for the semi-long term? Or maybe it's not Ellis who's the problem, but Nomar Garciaparra, in which case you figure Jack Hannahan is now a permanent Athletic.
